Great question. I like to teach them both but I start with standard notation first. I think it’s a really useful skill as they can use it for any instrument.
I get beginner children to use their thumb or pick at first and then progress to a more usual finger strum. I start with thumb/pick as sometimes strumming can make little fingers sore.
Go gradually into tuned up the fretboard and get them to think about playing in positions (eg third position - index finger at 3rd fret etc)
Thank you for your great advice. Could you explain the different positions eg 1st 2nd 3rd erc or is a video that explains it. I am only aware of different positions on a violin viola and cello
It'll be the same as viola but with frets. For any phrases/sections of notes get them to use their index finger on whichever note is on the lowest fret. It allows them to reach upo naturally and find the next few frets with their second, third and fourth fingers.
