I’ve been in love with this song by the English folk band Heron for some time. They recorded a whole album in 1971 outside a rural English cottage in Devon with all the background sounds of the summertime in the background. The album became Twice As Nice & Half the Price. This one is my favourite track.

Here’s a lovely version of the re-formed band playing it live sat Bridport in 2005:

This one is by one of my all time favourite bands The Magnetic Fields from their epic album 69 Love Songs. In fact it was this band and the Stephin Merritt's playing in particular that really first got me to pick up and lean ukulele.

Here’s a brilliant number from The Field Mice. The Field Mice were a fabulous band on the independent Sarah Records, based in Bristol. I always like listening to them this time of year when the weather starts to turn and you can stroll along the street kicking up the dead leaves. Maybe it’s the song title of this one or because my other favourite 7” of theirs is called Autumn Store.

I’m totally enthralled by this song. Kirsty MacColl’s vocals are stunning on the original and the melody is really gorgeous. It was written as the B-Side to her Days single (a cover of the classic Kinks song.) In my humble opinion this hidden gem outshines the A-side.
