I thought it might be nice to show you one of my favourite ukes. This one is a very early concert ukulele made by Samuel Kamaka. Interestingly this one is made from Monkeypod wood which gives it an extra warmth. I love it. When I play it I can just imagine being sat on a beach in Hawaii watching the Honu paddling in the shallows. The tone is just so gentle and comforting. Interestingly this one is labelled a concert despite being no larger than Kamaka sopranos of the time. I believe in the early days some builders used ‘concert’ for their more decorative ukuleles, rather than the larger size.
